How many sessions a large piece takes

A sleeve, a back or a leg don't get tattooed in one sitting. They're built over sessions, and knowing how the calendar works from the start saves you anxiety and surprises.

The short answer

It depends on size and how much black is involved, but as a rough guide:

  • Forearm or medium piece: one to three sessions.
  • Half sleeve: around two to four.
  • Full sleeve: four to six or more.
  • Full back: a long project, often five or more sessions spread over time.

These are ranges, not promises: at the consultation, with the design in front of us, we estimate the real number and build a calendar.

Why it's done in sessions

Skin is an organ and tattooing it is controlled aggression. Working too many hours in a row over a large area punishes it: it swells, bleeds more and heals worse, and that shows in the final result. Splitting the work lets each part heal properly before it's touched again. In blackwork, where the solid-black fill is demanding, this matters even more.

Going in sessions isn't "taking longer for the sake of it". It's what makes the black look even and the piece hold up years later. Rushing gets paid for in the skin.

How much gets done per session

A typical session lasts a few hours, with breaks. How much gets covered depends on the area (some hurt and are worked more slowly, I cover it in does blackwork hurt?), on how you handle the session, and on the density of the black. It's not about racing, but about leaving each stretch well done.

The calendar and the deposit

Between sessions there's usually a few weeks, the healing time. From the first appointment you'll have a clear idea of how many sessions to expect and at what pace. Each date is reserved with its deposit, which comes off the total — the project moves at your pace, not the other way round.

A big project is a relationship of months. Better to start it knowing how the road goes.

Quick questions

Can I do the sessions close together if I'm travelling in?

The calendar can be tightened a bit for travellers, always respecting healing. We look at it in getting tattooed in Barcelona from abroad.

Do I pay it all up front?

No. Work is done in sessions and each is paid at its own pace; the deposit reserves the date and comes off the total.

What if I need to pause for a while?

No problem: large projects can be paused and picked back up. The piece waits.
